Making Midnight Sky Wrap

  • by

Theresa, Chuck, and I are on our way to North Carolina for the Southern Alpaca Celebration! But of course we couldn't leave you without a new pattern on a new loom.

This week's pattern is made on a 2ft square loom by Stoney Meadows Alpacas and Stone Mountain Looms.

We've rated this one a  higher difficulty because this one is made in a few pieces that you have to sew, crochet, or some how connect the pieces together to get the final beautiful end project. But don't let that scare you! Anyone can do this project, it just takes time.

The Project

I had so much fun with this project. The loom fairies had come not to long ago to deliver all sorts of fun new looms to me. One of the looms was the 2ft square. I've played on squares before, but not very much. And I've usually only played on them at demonstrations so I've never actually completed a project on them. But Theresa has made many wonderful projects off the square and I've pinned many fun potential projects on my pinterest that would involve the square looms, so I was excited to play.

The best part about any project is picking out yarn. I needed enough yarn for a large project because I knew I was going to be making three squares. I ended up going with Lion Brand's Scarfie yarn. **Caution about this yarn, it is 1-ply meaning it does tend to break when you pull and yank on it. I do not suggest this yarn if you are a beginner. With that said, the skein was large enough that I felt comfortable I would not run out of yarn half way through my project, and their Scarfie yarn has a lovely variation in it that, when woven, creates a beautiful pattern and contrast.

I am a big fan of using three colors, so I ended up picking two other yarns to accent the Scarfie yarn.

Now it was time to start!

I got out the 2ft square and began weaving. OH MY GOODNESS! This loom is super quick, easy, and fun to play on! I couldn't believe this was the first time I've played with the 2ft

square loom. It's like I've been missing out this whole time! In fact, I highly recommend this loom if you are new to this type of weaving. Not only is the size great for making all sorts of projects, but the weaving is easy and fun. And did I mention fast?

I ended up finishing 1 1/2 squares in a very short amount of time right before bedtime.

The next day I ended up spending the day with my wonderful man who took me to see The Greatest Showman. That's right, he willingly took me to see this musical and oh my gosh it was so worth it! Even he enjoyed the story and music! If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend going. I still have chills from the bearded lady's song and the amazing performance by Zac Efron and Zeadaya. *For those of you who don't know me, I hated Zac Efron since High School Musical, but I got to hand it to him in this movie, he did great.

When we returned, I of course went on youtube and found the soundtrack and ended up listening to it a few hundred times through while I finished weaving the rest of my squares. The music is THAT good.

With all my squares complete, I of course had to have help in the form of Duncan, my handsome man's year and half old kitten. He was ever so helpful grabbing my skein of yarn and running off with it while I finished the last square. Naughty baby.

As I was figuring out how to crochet all my pieces together, Duncan thought it'd be a perfect time to get comfortable.

It took awhile, but I managed to get rid of the fluff ball, sew in my ends, and begin piecing everything together. I was surprised by how long it took me to put everything together. I think it took me longer to crochet everything together than to weave it all. Surprising but true. I'm not very good at crocheting just yet, so that may have factored into it. But I had a lot of fun figuring it out and crocheting a lovely border that this wrap deserved.

The finished project is beautiful, and comfortable to wear. I am very proud of this piece. It is very worth the time and effort it took to make it. And just imagine what this wrap could look and feel like if you're using Alpaca yarn with a splash of angora! I'm so glad I'm off to Southern Alpaca Celebration today where I can restock my alpaca yarn supply.

Thank you for making it all the way to the end! If you haven't already, go purchase the pattern here!
